Addressing UV Nail Light Concerns

If you've landed on this article with concerns about the safety of UV nail polish dryers, you're not alone. The Mellow Bar team recognizes this has been a lingering concern for some of you, and we're here to provide clear answers and solutions.

Here are clarifications to some frequently asked questions, sourced from reputable media articles:

Is it true that UV lamps cause 20 to 30% cell death?

This statistic comes from a study that observed cell death after 20 minutes of continuous UV exposure. However, during a gel manicure, hands are exposed to the UV lamp in short bursts – typically 60 seconds per hand, not continuously for 20 minutes. In total, a client's exposure is about 5 minutes per session, far less than the study's conditions.

Can repeated or chronic use of UV lamps damage cells?

The studies don't specify the threshold for "repeated" or "chronic" usage that could lead to harm. Typically, gel manicures occur bi-weekly, with nonconsecutive exposure. Plus, clients who opt for our Japanese gel might visit even less frequently, thanks to its lasting wear.

Still concerned?

We've got you covered! Our intake form lets you choose whether you'd like to use UV protective gloves during your appointments. We also provide these gloves in the salon upon request.

Additionally, we offer LED light options at both locations. While not all gel products are LED-compatible, we've expanded our color selection for those that are. We'll inform you about the light options and compatible gel brands when you book online.

We understand your concerns about cell damage extend beyond nails, and we deeply care about your overall health. It's important to remember that regular exposure to natural sunlight and tanning beds can also lead to cell damage.

At Mellow Bar, we're committed to providing professional, trustworthy solutions and keeping informed about the latest research to ensure the safest practices in our salons. Your health and trust are our top priorities, and we're here to address any further concerns or questions you might have!
